Sony Engineering Corporation(President-:Mr.Tetsuo Kato)and Hino-Gakuen Elementary and Junior High School of Shinagawa ward (Principal-:Mr.Masami Sugatani) together developed an year-long curriculum for “mono-zukuri (craftsmanship) education”.
The collaboration was realized with the assistance of Sony Foundation for Education (Chairman:Mr.Nobuyuki Idei) which holds “mono-zukuri class”(for elementary and junior high school students) at Sony's technology and manufacturing centers offices throughout Japan.
The annual study program developed for 9th grade is an extremely unique curriculum, where it takes one year to complete making a “line tracer” robot that runs along a track field.
Ideas and technology for manufacturing robot were provided by Sony Engineering, whereupon the company's engineers and technology teachers of Hino-Gakuen cooperated to develop a year-long curriculum.
Elective technology classes (Step Up Learning II & III) in the new school year 2008 is planned to include 20 ninth graders.
“Mono-zukuri” is a tradition that Japan, a nation with strength in science and technology, must treasure and carefully nurture.
Through the process of making high quality robot in a year, students will learn the basics of professional craftsmanship in the fields of electronics, mechanical engineering and software. The students will experience the joy of creation and overcoming obstacles, and as a result will have engineering as a possible occupational option for future.
